On-Premise

« Back to Glossary Index

“On-Premis” describes a way to deliver software that enables the user to operate the software by them selves. The software can run on an owned Computer, a Server, a data-center or on rented parts of such: from a “naked” server-rack up to a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC).

Advantages for the operators are:

  • data sovereignty
  • a maxiumum of control and direct responsibility
  • integration within the operator’s IT-landscape

Drawbacks are:

  • higher costs due to infrastructure and staff
  • a lack of convinience

The trend in IT points away from On-Premise solutions towards SaaS-solutions in the cloud. Especially for (energy-)providers the advantages of redundancy and de-centralization outweigh any drawbacks.
